When decorating one’s apartment, people often fear of opting for a rustic theme. However, rustic is in and there are some sure-fire ways to embrace rustic styles in your apartment. Before delving into all the ways to embrace rustic-style, I want to clear a few things up. Rustic doesn’t always meet twigs and berries and having a rustic apartment doesn’t mean that you have to wear galoshes around 24/7. Rustic is all about dark, almost vintage-inspired wood and having unfinished, less modern apartment accents.
Instead of just going on giving you unhelpful generalizations, I’ll give you some more specific examples to work off from! However, if you want a mental image, think about all of those cute little cottages that you see in the movies where people are always happy and relaxed and see cute little animals scurrying in their front yards. That should be your inspiration; if rustic makes people that happy, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t give a rustic-inspired apartment a go!
Accent Tables
An easy way to embrace rustic styles in your apartment is through accent tables. Accent tables range from bedside tables, coffee tables, and even small tables that just hold lamps. When choosing a rustic accent table, definitely opt for woody colors: browns, dark greens, etc. However, if you prefer brighter colors, you can always find accent tables that are unfinished and aren’t super slick. Use woods over plastics and metals and, if you are really feeling woodsy, then you should buy a candle that smells woodsy ~pause for laughter~.
Bed Frames
Bed frames set the tone for the entire bedroom. So, if you’re feeling extra rustic, definitely opt for a rustic-looking bed frame. Like, with all rustic furniture, let me explain to you what exactly a rustic bed frame looks like because, let me tell you, they’re tough to spot. A rustic bed frame, unlike accent furniture, can be either wooden or metal. A wooden bed frame that embraces mother nature should be unfinished and almost bark-like. However, if you’re like me and you prefer metal bed frames, you can definitely go for a metal bed frame in a rustic-inspired room. The metal should be darker and have some gold and red accents. The frame itself shouldn’t be clunky (unless it’s a wooden frame).
Chairs
When it comes to chairs (i.e. barstools, desk chairs, couches, lounge chairs, etc.) you can never go wrong with rustic. When it comes to chairs, you need to focus on color and material (and, of course, quality). When people think about rustic colors, they automatically jump to the color brown. However, when buying chairs, you should always find some that give your apartment a pop of color. Definitely go for chairs that have tones of olive, burgundy, dark greys, oranges, and/or leafy and floral patterns. If you are really trying to go all-out, purchase barstools that look like tree stumps (I promise you I’m not even kidding, this can actually be a fantastic look).
Accessories
Accessorizing an important may be the most important task when decorating (and I’m not just saying that because I don’t like assembling bed frames). When rustically-accessorizing your apartment, start simple. First and foremost, rustic picture frames are easy, classy, and absolutely stunning in any apartment color scheme. These picture frames can either be hung on the walls or placed on the accent tables described above. Another great way to accessorize your rustic, fun apartment are plants! If you are like me and are allergic to everything, it’s okay to use fake plants. However, I recommend placing succulents on the window sill to give your apartment a more mother nature-feel. In addition, buy artwork of nature-esque things. When people come over, they will think that you’re a nature woodsman!
Now, where should you purchase all of your new rustic apartment décor? I promise you that you don’t have to travel to the woods and go camping. You can buy all of these items from the comfort of your own bed! Here are some great websites to visit when decorating your apartment rustically-themed:
- Etsy
- CORT
- Urban Outfitters
- Amazon

- One King’s Lane
- West Elm
- Ikea
- Bed Bath & Beyond

Embrace nature, embrace darker, woodsier colors, embrace the rustic atmosphere. You can’t go wrong when you go for rustic and, trust me, you can turn your little apartment into your dream getaway cottage where you are sitting on the porch sipping tea in no time. If you aren’t into rustic furniture, you can always opt for rustic trinkets, like wall art, clocks, or even silverware. Do some deep Google searching and check out the websites I gave you to find cute and affordable rustic apartment decorations. Happy apartment decorating to all of my readers and, remember, when in doubt, go rustic!
